"How Do I Make Money With Social Networking?"

Good question. One I receive quite frequently. I wish there were an easy answer, but it's just not that simple. I mean, you can make money by being involved in social networking, but it takes time. It also requires being involved.

First, the time thing. Just like anything else in sales, there will be some time involved before you realize a payout. Anyone that pitches you on something with an immediate payoff from implementing their program, widget or service is flat out puffing. It takes time to learn the new system (widget, product, service) and work the kinks out; making it your own requires practice and repetition. You're not going to open the box and immediately start collecting the Benjamins. But you've at least got to open the box and start using the new tool. Only time and practice will tell you if that tool is truly effective for your business. So, you gotta' put in the time before you start collecting a dime.

Now, the involvement issue. I've known many people that have put up a profile (insert "website," "blog," "billboard" or any of a number of tools in place of "profile" here), and sat back waiting for the phone to ring. You and I both know that's not going to happen. There needs to some follow-up, a consistent, cohesive effort to get the message heard, that billboard seen. That follow-up and consistent, cohesive effort in social networking is getting involved - making sure that others know you're out there, ready, willing and able to do business. And it doesn't involve an overt sales pitch for your services. You get involved (and noticed) on these sites by contributing in forums, posting to blogs and responding to questions posted by others. You also get involved by expanding the reach of your network, making connections that go far beyond our normal networking activities.

I'll go into more detail on these points in my next post, Part II: The Money Question. But suffice it to say, you can make money through social networking.
